Biography
Stefania Gabrielle Germanotta, better known as LADY GAGA, is an international pop star born in Yonkers, New York. Her debut single, the international chart-topping hit "Just Dance," established her as an up-and-coming superstar upon its release in 2008. She cites John Lennon, Madonna and Michael Jackson among others as her idols and inspirations.

Born into a New York Italian family on March 20, 1986, Gaga got her stage name when music producer Rob Fusari compared her vocal style to Freddie Mercury and took the name Gaga from the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga." She wrote her first piano ballad at 13 and attended Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girl Catholic school in Manhattan, before proceeding to study music at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts at age 17. She is one of only 20 people in the world to have ever done so. During her post-secondary studies, Gaga developed strong writing skills. However, completely uninterested in her studies and desiring to be a songwriter and vocal performer, she withdrew from university before graduation.

At age 19, the self-professed fan of the glam rock of David Bowie and Queen began performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side. She was briefly signed to Def Jam but the working relationship was terminated after just a few months. In 2008, pop-rap superstar Akon took her under his wing, signing her to his vanity label Kon Live in association with Interscope Records. During this time, Gaga also wrote songs for the Pussycat Dolls before scoring her own record deal and releasing 'The Fame,' with its hit singles "Poker Face," "Just Dance" and "Beautiful Dirty Rich."

The debut album was positively reviewed by critics and topped number one in the UK, Canada and Ireland and the the top five in the US and Australia. The single "Just Dance" was released in April 2008 topping the charts in six countries and was also nominated for Grammy Award in the Best Dance Recording category. The second single “Poker Face” was an even greater success. It topped the charts throughout the US, Australia, New Zealand, and Western Europe. In 2009, after having opened for New Kids on the Block and the Pussycat Dolls, Gaga embarked on her first headlining tour, The Fame Ball Tour, which was critically acclaimed.

Two additional tracks, "LoveGame" and "Paparrazi," also became runaway hits and 'The Fame' was still enjoying a spot on the Billboard Top 40 when its follow-up, 'The Fame Monster,' appeared in November 2009. Although originally planned as a bonus disc (to be packaged alongside The Fame in a deluxe edition of Lady Gaga's debut), 'The Fame Monster' was quickly expanded to eight tracks, thus warranting its own release. The leadoff single "Bad Romance" became Gaga's fifth consecutive Top Ten single.

Throughout 2010, Gaga continued to dominate pop culture discourse with "Alejandro" and the Beyonce duet "Telephone" turning into international hits while she worked at her sophomore album. On New Years Day 2011, Gaga announced the May release of that second album, 'Born This Way.'

Gaga is inspired by fashion, which she claims is an essential component to her songwriting and performances. She works with a collective of artists, clothes designers, stage designers and sound artists, under the collective name 'Haus of GaGa'. She is also supportive of the gay community, crediting them for her early mainstream success.

In 2009, Gaga was nominated for a total of nine awards at the MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video for "Poker Face" and Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Special Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction for "Paparazzi." She managed to win the award for "Best New Artist" while her single "Paparazzi" won two awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. In October that year, Gaga received "Billboard" magazine's Rising Star of 2009 award.

Because of her achievement, Gaga was ranked the 73rd Artist of the 2000-10 decade by Billboard. As of May 2010, Gaga has sold over 15 million albums and over 40 million singles worldwide. In May 2010, Time magazine included her in its annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. Not only up there, in June 2010, Forbes listed Gaga fourth on its list of the 100 Most Powerful and Influential Celebrities in the world, and also ranked as the second most powerful musician in the world.
